Level I Improv: Introduction to Improv

Prerequisite: age 16 or older

Beginning with trust and relaxation exercises, students learn that there is nothing to fear – only fun to be had – in the world of improvisation.

Level II Improv: Creating Characters

Prerequisite: Level I

Start creating great comic characters, on the spot! Learn the secrets that will make you a whiz at auditions!

Level III Improv: Writers Lab

Ten 3-hour classes, once per week.
Prerequisite: Level II

Gotham City’s Writing Lab is a combination of improvisation and instant writing exercises. Each class includes advanced improv games along with timed writing exercises based around a variety of themes. After the students receive a theme (example: your favorite high school teacher) they get 10 minutes to write and then immediately perform the monologue without using their notes. After the first exercise, students almost always get over their fear and get into the spirit of the class. The results are amazing. Students learn how to trust their instincts, sharpen their writing skills, hone their ear and figure out how to capture the most interesting aspects of a character in a very short amount of time. The class ends with a performance of everyone’s best material.

Level IV Improv: Improv and Sketch

Ten 3-hour classes, once per week.
Prerequisite: Level III

This course will be about putting up a sketch show at the end of 10 weeks, Using sketch and improv for the special show which will run over 2 nights on a Friday and Saturday.
Following colpleation of class students can then be asked to Join our Shortform Company or our Sketch Comoany or perhaps Both.

Improv Scenework Master Class

Eight 3-hour classes, once per week.
Prerequisite: Level II at any established improv training center (Gotham City Improv, Chicago City Limits, Second City, The Magnet, The PIT, UCB, etc.)

In this intermediate / advanced class, we will explore scriptless scene work to the end of a YES for every AND.

Build an Original Longform

Six 3-hour classes, once per week.
Prerequisite: Level III at any established improv training center (Gotham City Improv, Chicago City Limits, Second City, The Magnet, The PIT, UCB, etc.)

This class explores longform elements, techniques, and styles to help teams create forms that emphasize their strengths and strengthen their “problem areas”.
