Level I: Introduction to Improv

$335

Ten 3-hour classes, once per week.
Prerequisite: age 16 or older

Tuesdays , 6:30-9:30, Starting April 20th- Taught by Marc Adam Smith

Beginning with trust and relaxation exercises, students learn that there is nothing to fear – only fun to be had – in the world of improvisation. Through the use of specific techniques, students gain confidence while acquiring the fundamental skills that allow them to create scenes and stories using nothing but their imaginations and each other – all completely on-the-spot. Throughout the course, a variety of short-form improv games (like those seen on Whose Line Is It Anyway?) will be introduced as a fun way to apply newly acquired skills. The final class will be a performance, hosted by the instructor, where students can demonstrate their new skills to invited guests.

Level II: Creating Characters

$335

Ten 3-hour classes, once per week.
Prerequisite: Level I

Start creating great comic characters, on the spot! Learn the secrets that will make you a whiz at auditions! You will have the opportunity to build a repertoire of characters ranging from silly, one-dimensional types, to more complex, multi-dimensional types. Plus, continued focus will be given to creating ever-better scenes. We spend time drilling the fundamentals to reinforce good habits and eliminate bad habits before they can become ingrained. More advanced concepts are introduced and new, more challenging games are played. The final class will include a performance, hosted by the instructor.

Level III: Writers Lab

$335

Ten 3-hour classes, once per week.
Prerequisite: Level II

$335

Ten 3-hour classes, once per week.
Prerequisite: Level II

Gotham City’s Writing Lab is a combination of improvisation and instant writing exercises.  Each class includes advanced improv games along with timed writing exercises based around a variety of themes.  After the students receive a theme (example:  your favorite high school teacher) they get 10 minutes to write and then immediately perform the monologue without using their notes. After the first exercise, students almost always get over their fear and get into the spirit of the class. The results are amazing.  Students learn how to trust their instincts, sharpen their writing skills, hone their ear and figure out how to capture the most interesting aspects of a character in a very short amount of time.  The class ends with a performance of everyone’s best material.

Explore character motivations and "wants" to create successful and hilarious improvised scenes while taking your first steps into long form improv.  The final class will include a performance, co-hosted by the instructor and the students.

Students who have successfully completed Level III are eligible to audition for our Short Form Improv Company, OFF THE TOP OF OUR HEADS.

Level IV: Longform Workshop

$270

Eight 3-hour classes, once per week. Starting May 6th Taught by Dave Storck
Prerequisite: Level III

This course will be about putting up 2 longform shows, an exploration of the more theatrical world of improv

Musical Improv Level I

$400

Eight 3-hour classes, once per week.
Prerequisite: none

  Instructed by Rob Schiffmann .

This class will focus on the basics of musical improvisation. We will work on building a melody, understanding song structure, creating lyrics and music and all sorts of goodies. We will work with solos, duets and even trios. While there is no formal prerequisite, an understanding of the basics of improvisation is very helpful. This class includes three performances during the course of the eight week session.
